Clapping
out syllables
Say a word (for example)
'happily' to the class.
Encourage your pupils to repeat the word slowly, clapping out the syllables.
'HA-PPI-LY'.
Ask your class how many syllables they clapped out. (In this case they
should give the answer as '3')
Try to use a variety
of words with different numbers of syllables.
Here are some to start with:
| Words
with 1 syllable |
Stop |

| Words

Ask the class if anyone
can think of a word with 5 syllables.
(Unbelievable has 5 syllables.)
Alternatively, you
could ask your pupils to go around the class clapping out the syllables
in their names.
