Alphabet
Shopping
This
is a fun game where children have to say an item that they (could have)
bought in a supermaket in alphabetical order around the classroom. The
game begins as follows.
Child
1: I went shopping and I bought some apples
Child 2: I went shopping and I bought some bread
Child 3: I went shopping and I bought some custard
Child 4: I went shopping and I bought some doughnuts
and so on until the
letter z (or until the children can't think of anything else!)
To make
it more challenging the children could have to remember everything on
"the shopping list" as it goes around the classroom.
For example:
| Child
1: |
I
went shopping and I bought some apples |
| Child
2: |
I
went shopping and I bought some apples
and bread |
| Child
3: |
I
went shopping and I bought some apples,
bread and custard |
| Child
4: |
I
went shopping and I bought some apples,
bread, custard
and doughnuts. |
Letters
that are particularly difficult, e.g. the letter "q", are fun
because children will find it difficult to think of a word. When a child
gets stuck you could ask the whole class if they can think of a food begin
with "q". Then you could use the word "quince" as
an example. This is a good word to use because it features in the poem
"The Owl and the Pussy Cat"! You could read the poem to them
later on in the day!
For the
letter v try vanilla ice-cream.
You can cheat on the letter x by writing x-mas cake on the board.
For the letter z we recommend using zucchinis!
