Topical Issues File

Students are often interested in issues happening now. To keep this interest alive and encourage their awareness of situations taking place, both around the world and in their local areas, why not create a class 'Issues File'.
A separate file can be created for each year group or you could have a main one kept in the geography classroom/school library.
Divide the folder into specific geographical topics. For example:
Transport, Farming, Natural disasters, Population, Holidays, Industry, Pollution and so on.
All the students need to do is bring in newspaper/magazine articles and then put them in the correct category of the 'Issues File'.
This is also a good way of encouraging ICT. The students can print out any information from the web and add it to the folder. At the same time, you will be compiling a bank of interesting and helpful websites for students to visit.
Everytime a class begins a new topic, why not start the first lesson by discussing some of the related issues in the file?
